Physiotherapy for Prolapse Management!
Prolapse, a common issue for many women, involves pelvic organs descending from their normal positions, causing discomfort. Physiotherapy offers effective solutions:
Understanding Prolapse:
Pelvic organs descend due to weakened pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues, often from factors like childbirth or ageing.
Identifying Symptoms:
Symptoms include pelvic pressure, noticeable bulges, discomfort during intercourse, incontinence, and difficulty emptying bladder or bowel.
How Physiotherapy Helps:
- Pelvic Floor Muscle Training: Personalised exercises, like Kegels, strengthen muscles, reducing prolapse severity.
- Education and Lifestyle Modifications: Guidance on lifting techniques, posture correction, weight management, and preventing exacerbating factors.
- Manual Therapy Techniques: Hands-on approaches like soft tissue mobilisation and myofascial release improve muscle function and alleviate discomfort.
With physiotherapy support, women can find relief and regain control over their pelvic health. Seek guidance from our qualified physiotherapists specialising in women's health for comfort and confidence.

Blood flow restriction training has some amazing benefits in an injury or post surgery rehab setting. It mimics high intensity exercise while working with lighter loads. When pain, injury or post surgery restrictions force you to work with lighter loads BFR training can help you to maintain your strength and muscle mass while minimising the risk of injury. If you aren’t injured then you’re still far better off working with heavier loads. But sometimes that’s just not on the cards for you!

The cross-education effect is a phenomenon whereby training one side of the body results in increased strength of the OPPOSITE side of the body. That’s right, train the left limb and get some strength gains in the right. More importantly, in a rehab setting you can minimise strength loss and muscle wasting of your injured side by continuing to train the other.
In a study by Farthing et al. they casted one arm of the participants and split them randomly into either a group that performed resistance training of the opposite arm, or a group that performed no resistance training. Once the cast was removed, muscle strength changes were tested. There was a 14.7% decrease in strength of the casted arm of the group who received no training, but NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGE in the strength of the casted arm in the trained group, those who received training on the opposite side.
The cross-education effect is driven by your nervous system, and to increase the neural drive enough to benefit from this effect you’ve got to keep exercise intensity high - heavier weights, fewer reps. #physio #rehab #beachlife #injuryrecovery

Manual therapy (hands-on treatments) can provide the following benefits:
β Pain Relief: Manual therapy techniques can help alleviate pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions. These techniques can target specific areas of pain, reduce feelings of muscle tension and promote relaxation.
β Improved Range of Motion: Manual therapy techniques can help improve joint range of motion, muscle tissue flexibility and restore comfortable movement patterns.
β Stress Reduction and Relaxation: Manual therapy techniques can have a calming effect on the nervous system. This can help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and improve overall well-being.
The effects of manual therapy are often immediate, and may last for hours, days or weeks. When coupled with exercise based treatment the benefits are more significant and longer lasting. At BeachLife Physio we offer a range of manual therapy techniques as well as dry needling to help you feel better and move more comfortably, while guiding you on the exercises that will help you to become stronger, more flexible and more resilient.
The combination of manual therapy and exercise can optimise the benefits of both modalities and support your journey towards recovery and improved physical well-being.

The snow season can bring about a lot of injuries if proper care isn't taken. Here are a few tips for preventing these injuries allowing you to have the best possible time on the snow!
Physiotherapists can play a valuable role in supporting individuals who train and compete in Jiu Jitsu:
Injury Prevention: Physiotherapists can assess an individual's movement patterns, strength, flexibility, and biomechanics to identify areas of potential vulnerability or imbalances that may increase the risk of injuries during Jiu Jitsu training. They can provide personalised exercises and guidance to address these issues, improving overall body mechanics and reducing the risk of injuries.
Rehabilitation: In the event of a significant injury, physiotherapists provide rehabilitation services to facilitate recovery and a safe return to Jiu Jitsu training. They can assess the injury, develop an individualised treatment plan, and use techniques such as manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and modalities to promote healing, reduce pain, restore range of motion, and rebuild strength and function.
Performance Enhancement: Physiotherapists can work closely with Jiu Jitsu athletes to optimise their physical capabilities and performance. They can develop exercise programs to improve strength, power, endurance, agility, and mobility specific to the demands of Jiu-Jitsu. By addressing any movement limitations, weaknesses, or imbalances, physiotherapists can help enhance an athlete's overall performance on the mat.
Recovery and Injury Management: Jiu Jitsu training can be physically demanding, and athletes may regularly experience fatigue, muscle soreness, or minor injuries. Physiotherapists can provide guidance on proper recovery strategies, including techniques for managing muscle soreness, optimising recovery and sleep, and incorporating appropriate stretching or mobility exercises to aid in recovery between training sessions.
It's important for jiu-jitsu practitioners to consult with a qualified physiotherapist who has experience working with combat sports athletes.
Alex Barr is a physiotherapist and Jiu Jitsu black belt, coaching out of the Manly MMA gym.
