The HSC can be both mentally and physically challenging. Looking after your health is important during this period. The stress and long hours of studying can cause neck and back pain. Here are a few tips to get you through.
Posture – Make sure you study at a table where you can sit with good posture. The awkward positions of lying down or sitting on the couch will leave you stiff and sore. Ensure you are sitting up tall with your shoulders back. The correct desk and chair height is important
Tip: You may need to change the height of your chair or sit on a pillow to achieve good posture.
Breaks – Take regular breaks: stand up, stretch and walk around for a few minutes. This will prevent stiffness and allow you to reset your posture. Scheduling breaks in will also refresh you and improve concentration.
Tip: Set an alarm for every hour to remind you to take a few minutes break.
Exercise – It is necessary to do some exercise every day. It is especially important during this study period to reduce stress, improve sleep and improve overall concentration.
Tip: Just a short 15 minute walk can be enough to refresh you and therefore make studying more efficient.
Eat Well and Hydrate – Concentrating can be difficult when you are hungry or dehydrated. Ensure you are eating nutritious foods and drinking enough water to prevent fatigue and loosing focus.
Tip: It is easy to skip meals and just snack while studying. Plan break times for each meal.
Sleep – To work at an optimum capacity your brain needs time to rest. Ensure you are getting to bed early and having enough sleep. If stress is making sleeping difficult, regular exercise can help.
Social and Relaxation Time – It is important to make sure you continue to have some time for yourself. This will boost your motivation and give you something to look forward to.
Tip: At least once a week take some time out and do something you enjoy.
