Physioform is a Pilates inspired exercise class that includes a range of low impact exercises to target important stability muscles in the trunk and pelvis, as well as improving balance, posture and mobility.
Improving strength and endurance in trunk and pelvis stability muscles creates a strong and stable base for you to complete tasks you require of your body; whether that is everyday tasks or performing in sport. Strong muscles in these areas reduces the risk of injuries, especially in the back, hips and knees.
Improving balance and proprioception (the body’s sense of its position) helps to decrease the risk of falls and the injuries resulting from these incidents. It also improves body awareness as a whole, which reduces the risk of injury as you become better able to control and coordinate movements. Improved proprioception also assists in learning new movement skills, such as when learning a new sport.
Improving strength and endurance of postural muscles helps to prevent pain caused by prolonged poor postures. Poor positioning often results in stiffness in the neck and upper back and can also be the cause of headaches.
Stretching and release work to improve mobility is important in reducing the risk of muscle and joint injuries. Exercises in the classes work to reduce muscle tension and ensuring functional range is available in joints.
These classes are a great way to manage long term dysfunction or build strength and confidence when returning from injury. As we keep our class to a maximum of 5 participants, we can tailor exercises to your ability to help achieve your goals safely. Classes use a variety of equipment to provide variety and target different systems and areas of the body; including hand weights, resistance bands, Pilates balls, Pilates rings and many more!

Yes, moving your body through different sequences is going to have benefits for your physical body, it can be a strengthening and stretching form of movement, but where physioflex differs from many other forms of exercise, it has a strong focus on breath. Physiologically, your breath and neural system are linked. When we get excited about something or stressed out, our heart and breath rate increase and become shallow as you activate your sympathetic nervous system (fight and flight response). On the other hand, you can create calmness via your breath. Slow, long exhales stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest response) which slows everything down and promotes a state of relaxation. This kind of breath work can help you deal with stress and even improve sleep.

Adequate Nutrition - helps to maximise performance, replenish energy stores after exercise and repair and build tissue to for training adaptations.
Adequate Hydration - Fluids and electrolytes are lost in sweat during exercise and hot weather. Dehydration causes your body to work less efficiently and recover slower.
Rest - Adequate sleep is important for the body, to repair damaged tissue and allow for training adaptations.
Recovery Sessions - Regularly scheduled lower intensity exercise gives the body a break from high intensity training and reduces your risk of overuse injuries.
Body Maintenance - Stretching and massage improve the length and integrity of muscle tissue and promote blood flow to assist in the repair and building of tissue.
Over the last week, we have be talking about what causes pain during pregnancy. This week we bring you tips on how to prevent or reduce their impact, to reduce pain and discomfort during pregnancy.
One of the most common sporting injuries is a sprain to the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. This occurs when the ankle 'rolls' outwards and the ligaments are overstretched. This is often caused by weakness in the ankle when it is put in a more challenging situation, for example, stepping in a hole or off a curb.
It is best to see a physiotherapist ASAP after injury to assess the damage, get appropriate treatment and rehabilitation to get the best recovery

The application of ice or cold packs are a very common treatments used to manage an acute injury or to help with muscle recovery. Originally it was believed that ice therapy reduced pain, swelling and helped with recovery from injury. However, recent studies have challenged the original theories behind the benefits.
How does ice work and how helpful is it?
Ice applied to the skin slows and reduces the activity of the nerves in the area, which then decreases the pain sensation. Several studies have found that following a soft tissue injury, such as a hamstring strain, or joint replacement surgery the use of ice significantly reduced pain. However, it is important to note that these studies found that function and recovery were not improved.
In the first few days after joint replacement surgery it is crucial to improve range of movement at the joint. Ice therapy in conjunction with pain medication is used to allow for range of motion exercises to be completed with minimal pain.
The theory behind using ice therapy for swelling is that the cold temperature causes our blood vessels to constrict, resulting in reduced blood flow to the region. New evidence has found that the cold does not penetrate deep enough for this effect to occur and therefore ice does not reduce swelling.
More effective ways to reduce swelling include:
Compression - Compression bandaging or taping to prevent the swelling from accumulating.
Elevation - Positioning the injured area raised up to allow the excess fluid to drain with gravity.
Cold Water Immersion
Athletes often use cold water immersion to assist with muscle recovery during periods of intense competition. Immersion in cold or iced water causes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and metabolism, as well as increasing the amount of air we expire. However, the role of these in recovery are still unknown. While it is thought that these factors may help flush out toxins in the muscles that are caused by intense exercise, there is no evidence to support this. There is some evidence that cold water immersion reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and reduces athletes perception of general fatigue and leg soreness.
Risks of Using Ice Therapy
There are risks you need to be aware of when using ice therapy. When placing ice on the skin, there is potential for an ice burn. This is more likely to occur with direct contact on the skin for an extended period. For this reason, avoid the ice being in direct skin contact (use a thin towel in between) and do not apply for longer than 20 minutes at one time.
When using cold water immersion, be aware that a significant change in body temperature can cause shock in some people. Athletes should be supervised at all times by someone with first aid qualifications to ensure that any symptoms of shock can be dealt with immediately. Shock if left untreated can be life threatening.
Overall, ice therapy and cold water immersion may be useful for reducing pain and there are relatively low risks associated with its application. However, elevation and compression are more effective to manage swelling.
The application of ice, compression and elevation are just the initial phase of injury management. To ensure return to full function, appropriate assessment, treatment and rehabilitation is essential.

Nutrition - Inadequate energy intake will leave your body unable to replenish energy stores and repair and build tissue to attain your training goals. Proper nutrition helps to maintain blood glucose during exercise, maximise performance and improve recovery time.
Tip: Ensure you have adequate carbohydrate and protein intake in your diet. Immediately after exercise consume high glycemic index (GI) carbohydrate foods.
Hydration - Fluids and electrolytes are lost in sweat during exercise and hot weather. Dehydration causes your body to work less efficiently and recover slower, hindering your performance. A small amount of carbohydrate taken with your fluids has been shown to improve water absorption into the body.
Tip: Drinking 500 ml of fluid within 2 hours before exercise promotes adequate hydration (however, fluid consumption should still be maintained during activity). For activities lasting longer than 1 h, it is recommended to consume carbohydrate and electrolyte rich sports drinks.
Rest - Adequate sleep is important for the body, to repair damaged tissue and allow for training adaptations. Rest also refers to ‘relative rest’, in the form of recovery sessions, where lower intensity exercise is completed. This gives the body a break from high intensity training and reduces your risk of overuse injuries.
Tip: Schedule a recovery session the day after a game or competition and also regularly into the training program.
Body Maintenance - Stretching and massage are an important component of recovery, to improves the length and integrity of muscle tissue as your body adapts to higher training loads. Massage promotes blood flow to muscles and other structures to assist in the repair and building of tissue.
Tip: When you are performing a high training load, ensure you complete regular stretching sessions and schedule regular massages to prevent injury.
